The present study aims to examine the element of surprise in the novelistic discourse as an important text that can establish a communicative relationship between the speaker and the recipient in light of the theory of receiving and acceptance. The element of surprise was not fully taken into account in Alice Walker's novel (The Color Purple), and there has been little debate about it in light of the reader's receiving and acceptance. The results of the study revealed the active role of the surprise in circulating a positive discourse of interaction between the text and the reader.en_US
